J. J. Lattimer are a long standing family run business that pride themselves on the quality of the home they build not only for the clients but for the continued pride and satisfaction it gives them in doing so.

“Every year we try to give that little bit extra. It is a big team effort at the end of the day, and professionalism is the key to it. Attention to detail is one of the key factors”
George Lattimer
In the trade for more than 30 years, Lattimer Homes provides a shining example of how the prosperity of a business can be ensured by consistently taking pride in your work and paying attention to even the most minor details.
In an industry where professionalism and quality reap rewards, there are few higher accolades than the NHBC’s Pride in the Job Award, making Lattimer’s third consecutive triumph last year all the more impressive. This bought the company’s total to five in the national competition for small-medium sized businesses from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. On top of this, the company has won the regional award on seven occasions.

Winning their third consecutive
NHBC’s Pride in the Job Award
Based near Carlisle, the company was founded around 33 years ago by Joe Lattimer. George, Joe’s son, is now responsible for most of the day to day on-site matters. “There was a father in the trade before him” explains George, “but that was completely separate from the business as it is now. He worked extremely hard and just built it up.” |
From these humble beginnings, the business has expanded to incorporate many family members along with a sizeable and loyal team of employees from the local area. “My nephew and cousin are now part of the team and we’ve got other guys who’ve worked with us for over 25 years – the younger guys take knowledge from them” says George. “Our ethos goes right across the board and that is why it works – by keeping tightly knit. That includes the contracting side too – they sometimes don’t a get a pat on the back as we do, but without them we couldn’t do the job as we do now.”

The Lattimers team
George's approach is a typically modest one; “We don’t want to expand too much, partly so we can keep our fingers on the pulse. If you outgrow, obviously you haven’t got the staff to do the job to such a high specification. I am still on the tools myself, although I enjoy talking to the clients as well. I think is important to keep that contact.”
The company’s workload ranges from renovation and conversions right through to housebuilding. Perhaps more than anything else, it is the attention to detail that characterises Lattimer’s work. This is demonstrated, for example, in the company’s treatment of some of Cumbria’s older existing constructions, prolonging the life expectancy of structures that have been up for six or seven hundred years. “Every year we try to give that little bit extra,” enthuses George. “It is a big team effort at the end of the day, and professionalism is the key to it. Attention to detail is one of the key factors,” he continues. “If something need covering up then we protect it early. That allows us to finish things off to a higher specification.” It is clear to see why Lattimer Homes’ approach has paid dividends in the NHBC’s Pride in the Job Award scheme.
